Foundations
Being ready for AI agents means two things — getting found by them, and being usable once they arrive. Here's how the factors split, and why you need both.
“Agent-ready” gets thrown around loosely. In practice it has two distinct halves, and a business needs both. Nail one and miss the other, and the agent still walks away.
Visibility is whether an agent can find and consider you in the first place. When a customer asks an assistant to “find a plumber near me,” visibility decides whether you’re in the set it pulls from — whether you show up in AI search and answers, whether the crawlers behind those answers are allowed to read you, whether your data is structured enough that an agent can recommend you with confidence.
Usability is whether an agent can actually act once it’s on your site. The customer’s agent lands on your page and tries to do the thing — read your services, check availability, book, get a price. Usability is whether your site lets it: real buttons it can identify, labeled forms it can complete, a booking flow it can finish, prices it can read.
One gets you considered. The other gets you the job. They are not the same work.
There are two ways this fails, and they’re mirror images.
Visible but unusable. An agent recommends you and follows the link — and then your contact form is a wall of unlabeled fields, your booking is “call us,” your prices are “request a quote.” The agent can’t finish. It backs out and picks the competitor whose site works. You earned the exposure and wasted it at the finish line.
Usable but invisible. Your site is immaculate: semantic, labeled, schema everywhere, an agent could sail through it. But you’ve blocked the AI crawlers, or you have no presence in the places agents look, so no agent is ever sent. A perfect site no one arrives at.
Agent-ready means found and functional. Most local businesses have neither handled. The ones paying attention often chase visibility while their site can’t complete a task — which is the worse failure, because the traffic shows up and bounces.
A few factors pull double duty. Good structured data helps an agent both pick you and parse you. That overlap isn’t a coincidence — it’s where the highest-leverage work sits.
Fix usability first. It’s entirely in your control, it’s where most sites are broken, and it’s where the job is won or lost. Then keep visibility open: don’t block the crawlers, keep your profile and schema strong. Do both and you’re not merely findable or merely functional — you’re agent-ready.
A scan measures the usability foundation directly, plus the discovery signals that bridge to visibility. Whether you’re actually cited in AI answers is the broader game, built on authority and content over time.
